Fitbit
A confidential wearable health program with Fitbit. The device asked more of the people wearing it than anything in the lineup, so the interface and the hardware were designed with unusual care to meet the Fitbit bar for experience. Details remain under NDA.

A more invasive wearable that still had to feel like a Fitbit.
Fitbit was testing a new wearable health device, one that sat closer to the body and asked more of the people wearing it than anything before it. That raised the stakes on every detail. People accept a new kind of device only when it feels considerate, clear and safe from the first touch, and Fitbit's bar for experience is high. The specifics remain under NDA, so this case study covers the process rather than the product. One question ran through the hardware and the software alike: how do you make something more demanding feel effortless?

Interface and hardware designed together, then tested with real people.
Karim led UX design across multiple rounds of in-person user research. Each round put prototypes in people's hands, with the on-device interface and the physical details of the hardware refined together rather than in isolation. Visual design and data visualization made the health readings legible, and short videos explained the concept before participants tried it. Participants received a research kit in a plain kraft mailer carrying the Fitbit mark, so the study felt like a considered product from the moment it arrived.
Evidence from real wearers shaped a device built to Fitbit standards.
Each round replaced assumptions with what people actually felt, said and did while wearing the device. The findings fed straight into the next prototype, tightening the interface and the hardware until the experience met the Fitbit bar. The numbers stay confidential. The approach does not: design hardware and software as one experience, test early with real people, and give sensitive products extra care.
